Expressing possession in Bulgarian

The Bulgarian equivalent of the possessive ‘s

Bulgarian uses the preposition на to indicate possession (unlike English, in Bulgarian the object that someone owns comes first, then the preposition, and, finally, the owner):

колите на Том = Tom’s cars

играчката на детето = the kid’s toy

играчките на децата = the kids’ toys

The equivalent of the preposition ‘of’

The same preposition is used in place of the English of when talking about one inanimate object being a part of another:

началото на филма = the beginning of the film

краката на масата = the legs of the table
